Sunday Memorial - Remembering Felix

Last month for World Cat Day, the Krew let me do a memorial post for 4 kitties that have passed on to the Rainbow Bridge in recent years. Today is the 2-year anniversary of one of those losses, dear Felix. I hope you'll bear with me while we dedicate today's blog post to him, even if it's mostly a retread of what was said last month.

Felix (and his sister Tigger) were born as barn kittens to one of my ex's mom's barn cats in approximately mid-April 1994 (I used April 15, Tax Day in the U.S., as their approximate birthday). We were visiting there up in Ohio the first week of June that year, we'd driven up from Texas with our dog. Even though we had 4 cats at home already, I just fell in love with them both, and thus we drove back home with the dog as well as two new kittens.

Felix, May 2003
Felix, as you can see, was a black panther kitty with just a small patch of white hairs at his throat. He was the friendliest and most outgoing kitty there was, never got in a fight with any of the other cats -- though he'd defend himself if anycat started something -- and he seemed to try and defend Tigger against the other kitties sometimes (they'd pick on her mercilessly, I don't know why).

Felix, November 2006
Poor Felix developed some ear problems in summer of 2007; what I had initially thought was an ear infection turned out to be some kind of cyst/tumor that kept reoccuring in the same general area. Over the course of 6 weeks, he had three surgeries. Sadly, even though he made it through the 3rd surgery fine, for some unknown reason he died during recovery without waking up from the anesthesia. I was devastated when the vet called me.

Felix, December 2006
As Pixie gets older, he's starting to fill out and look more like Felix. He even seems to be growing some white hairs at his throat, just like Felix had. I've called him Felix by mistake more than once in the past few weeks, especially since the World Cat Day post and as this anniversary approached, with Felix on my mind.

I had Felix cremated, and then got this simulated-rock urn with a nameplate to keep his remains in. I was going to put it out in the front bushes area by the house, but it never has made it out there yet and instead sits inside in the den on a shelf unit in a place of honor where I can see it regularly and think of him often, next to Tigger's similar urn.

I still love you and miss you, my sweet Felix. I hope you and Tigger are having a great time together at the Rainbow Bridge, outside in the forever sunshine with plenty of grass and treats and lots of kitty friends to play with.

Mom said she understands about the rock urn not making it outside ~ when her beloved Lilac Point Siamese cat Henry died (1985 ~2004) mom had his ashes put in a beautiful wooden urn with a brass nameplate and she intended to put him in the garden. But she couldn't do it ~ so his urn sits by the desk and she gets great comfort from just resting her hand on the urn sometimes to let Henry know she will never forget him.

RIP sweet Felix

Mom gets all leaky when she reads these stories because she knows how much you must miss Felix...just like my mom misses our guardian angels. We have not put outside any of the ashes of our guardian angels, they are all still in the house with us because mom can't bear to put them outside. She says someday she'll figure out the right thing to do.
